A bit of history

Our postal service is one of the oldest in Europe. The origin of mail began over a thousand years ago. It all started back in the era of Kievan Rus, when there was a yam duty, according to which each representative of the state had to assist the princely messengers. The thirteenth century was marked by the creation of the first postal stations (pits), which communicated with the most remote regions of the country. In the 15th and 16th centuries, draft duty was further developed. Postal stations were created every 40-100 miles throughout Russia. Posad people carried the yam duty, serving the needs of the messengers. In 1516, the first Yamskaya decree was issued, which regulated the delivery of letters. In 1665, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich concluded an agreement with the Dutchman J. Svedenny on the creation of a full-fledged post office in our country. The result of this was the organization of postal communication between Moscow and the northern capital, as well as Riga and Arkhangelsk. After that, a postal message appeared with the cities of Siberia.

At the same time post offices were opened in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Riga. In 1725, the postal routes were over ten thousand miles long. In 1740 there were already post offices in many large Russian cities. Since 1781, it was possible to transfer not only cargo and letters, but also money by mail. In the nineteenth century, with the development of railway communication, the postal service began to develop even more rapidly. At the end of the century, more than 34 thousand employees worked at the Russian post office. In 1843, the postal reform took place, after which stamps appeared on envelopes, and the ability to send letters using mailboxes. Their number in 1896 was about fifteen thousand pieces.

Every year, the Russian Post receives about 2.5 billion letters and invoices (of which 1 billion are from government agencies) and processes more than 365 million parcels. Russian Post serves about 20 million subscribers in Russia, who receive about 1 billion copies of printed publications per year. Revenues of the Russian Post increased in all areas of business. The actual net profit of the Russian Post exceeded the planned figures by 28% and amounted to 758 million rubles.

Most post offices located in Russian cities operate according to a single schedule, which includes five full working days on weekdays, a "shortened" Saturday and a Sunday holiday.

Typically, the working hours of the post office are distributed as follows:

  • Monday through Friday– from 8.00 to 20.00, lunch break from 13.00 to 14.00;
  • on Saturday- from 9.00 to 18.00, lunch - as on weekdays, from 13.00 to 14.00.

However, depending on the characteristics of the work and the "load" of a particular post office, the schedule may be adjusted. So, Russian Post offices operating in small towns or sparsely populated housing estates can open an hour or two later and finish work earlier (for example, work from 9 to 16 without lunch). And branches located in the center of large cities, on the contrary, work until 10 pm without a lunch break.

How does the post office work on Sunday?

On Sundays, most post offices are closed, but city residents in most cases have the opportunity to send a parcel, parcel post or registered letter to the main post office on the weekend, which usually works on a busier schedule - without days off and lunch breaks.

The general post office hours of operation are as follows:

  • Monday through Friday from 8 am to 10 pm,
  • on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm.

In addition, in large cities, not only the main post office, but also several post offices located in different parts of the city can work on a day off. As a rule, on Sunday they work only in the first half of the day and without lunch, starting work at 9 am and ending at 2 or 3 pm.

In addition, there are branches of the Russian Post in Moscow and St. Petersburg that operate 24/7 - that is, around the clock, without days off and breaks. In Moscow, these are the central post office at Myasnitskaya, 26 (metro station "Chistye Prudy"), branches at Smolenskaya Square 13/21 ("Smolenskaya Square") and at Uralskaya Street, 1 ("Shchelkovskaya"). In the Northern Capital, only the post office of St. Petersburg operates in this mode at 9A Pochtamtskaya Street (Admiralteyskaya metro station).
